Sunbird Women Claim Title, Men Finish 2nd at PCSC Pentathlon

LA MIRADA, Calif. – The Fresno Pacific women's swimming and diving team took home the win at the Pacific Coast Swim and Dive Conference (PCSC) Pentathlon on Saturday at Splash! Aquatics Center. The Sunbirds also had a solid day on the men's side with a second-place finish.

• "This was a good first foray into racing for us. We definitely have a lot of areas where we need to get better, but that's to be expected. It's a long weekend, between travel and racing, so it's a test in a couple of different ways. Our goals are all at the end of the season, so we'll get right back to training this week and look forward to seeing some good progress in three weeks at the Pacific Invite."- head coach Josh Christensen

• Laura Fornshell gave the Sunbirds momentum right out of the gate, as the sophomore won the 200 free with a time of 1:53.14. Her dominance of the distance freestyle events continued into the day with a win in the 500 with a time of 5:00.12. She also earned points in the 25 free (12th), 100 free (2nd, 53.18) and 50 free (4th, 24.86) to total 38 points on the day.
• Bavindeep Basra totaled 33 points for the 'Birds, which was highlighted by three second-place finishes in the 100 fly (58.80), 100 breast (1:08.34) and 200 IM (2:12.13).
• Daria Belova also had a solid day for FPU, as the senior grabbed 31 points. A pair of second-place touches in the 50 breast (30.49) and the 100 IM (1:00.52) was the highlight, while Belova also finished third in the 50 fly (26.26).
• Samantha Woo added 25 points for FPU, while Olga Melnikova chipped in with 16.
• The women totaled 236 total points for the victory, ahead of California Baptist with 191.

• For the men, Aleksei Averchenko led the Sunbirds with 40 points on the day. A pair of wins in the 100 fly (50.76) and the 100 back (51.90) set the tone for the day.
• Dmitry Belolipetskiy added 34 points for FPU, as the sophomore also took home two wins. The 50 fly win came with a time of 22.99, while the 50 free victory timed at 21.17.
• Kyle Jones had a breakout day for the Sunbirds as well. The junior finished with 33 points after taking third in the 100 fly (52.42), third in the 100 back (54.67), fourth in the 200 IM (1:58.41) and sixth in both the 100 free and 100 breast.
• Maxim Shcherbakov was the final Sunbird to contribute major points with 31. His day featured a win in the 50 breast with a time of 26.63.
• The men closed the day with 233.5 points to finish behind California Baptist with 464.5.
